Ohio Amish Country
has found a quiet niche in the Appalachian foothills of Southern Ohio where
Amish living is at its best. It's the place where Amish discovered the old-life
isn't overrun with tourists. But, they still welcome those who do find and visit
them. See an Amish settlement, shop at Keim's, a real Amish store that is Amish owned
and Amish operated and has been for generations. This Southern Ohio Amish
merchant has an Amish shop that offers authentic Amish merchandise. Some of
Ohio's best Amish made furniture is found among the Wheat Ridge Amish community's Keim Family Market
in Adams County, Ohio. The Amish community in this Southern Ohio
location also offers plenty of Amish baked goods, Amish bulk foods, and best of
all, authentic Amish quilts. Amish quilt makers even get together for an annual
Amish auction.
Keim Family Market is well known for its homemade pies, fresh baked breads, cinnamon rolls, and peanut butter pretzels, among a variety of other selections from their full-line bakery such as seasonal fruitcakes. Their deli items include an array of cheese and meat selections. The bulk food section of the marketplace features spices and baking ingredients plus an enormous variety of canned goods, sugar-free foods and candies. And that’s just the half of it. Enter the woodworking portion of the market and feast your eyes on an original woodworking line that includes bedroom sets, dining sets, office furniture, armoires, hutches, hickory rockers, chairs, gliders, rocking horses, and Victorian playhouses and dollhouses. There are also plenty ornamental wood carved knick-knacks. In addition, they hand build gazebos, children play sets, footbridges and barns. Keim’s mail-order catalog has satisfied customers all over Ohio and from as far away as Alaska, California and the Bahamas. It features fresh made cheeses, cakes, fudge, jams and jellies plus an assortment of other treats such as peanut butter pretzels and cashew (peanut) brittle. Upon special request, they even ship their popular fresh-baked pecan and black walnut pies. The catalog also offers handmade woodcraft products including ornaments, knick-knacks, cherry and hickory rocking chairs, and outdoor furniture. History of Keim Family Market In 1975, Amish pioneers formed a 20th Century wagon train and migrated from Holmes County in Northeast Ohio to Adams County in Southwest Ohio. As word spread through the Amish heartland of the rural sanctuary that could further preserve their culture and tradition of the simple life, Roy Keim packed his family in 1980 and headed to the foothills of Ohio’s Appalachian country to start over. Twenty-five years ago, Roy Keim purchased 185 acres of farmland and began milking cows. Shortly thereafter, troubled times and financial crisis ensued, prompting Roy to take his wife’s homemade pies roadside along Route 32 resulting in a humble beginning that sparked the family business – Keim Family Market. Over the past two decades, Keim Family Market grew in size and reputation. Slowly, new homemade products were added to their offering and the modest Amish shop grew. Roy has since retired and turned Keim's marketplace over to his Amish friend Dan Miller.
