Miami County, Ohio has the hot spots for Ohio bird enthusiasts, Ohio birding organizations, birding tours, birding destinations, field guides, Ornithology or Ornithological studies, and much more!
Brukner Nature Center is a privately funded, nonprofit nature preserve dedicated to environmental education and wildlife rehabilitation, located just five miles west of Troy, Ohio. The 165 acre preserve, bounded by the Scenic Stillwater River, is comprised of a variety of habitats including pine forest, prairie, woodlands and wetland all traversed by 6 miles of hiking trails. Brukner Nature Center is an Ohio birding hotspot as noted in the newly published Waterford Press Pocket Guide to Ohio Birds. Annually we tally over 110 bird species, including a record 28 different warbler species discovered during our May “Early Morning Bird Hikes”, including the rare worm-eating warbler.
Our beautiful interpretive building houses a nature shop, wildlife exhibits and hands-on displays and is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00am – 5:00pm and Sunday from 12:30 – 5:00pm. Of special note to birders is our third floor, glass-enclosed birding vista, a comfortable spot to watch for feeder birds, including the commonly seen pileated woodpecker! Hiking trails are open from sunrise to sunset and last year a prothonotary warbler nested just off the newly renovated boardwalk trail! Parking is free. There is a small admission on Sundays only for nonmembers.
