If you are in Northwest Ohio, a Great Lakes museum ship awaits – the S.S. Willis
B. Boyer. It was formerly the Col. James M. Schoonmaker and once known as the
“Queen of the Lake Freighters.” It served for 69 years, built in 1911 and
retired in 1980. It opened on the East shore of the Maumee River across from
downtown Toledo in 1987. The tour is a fascinating history lesson of Great Lakes
shipping. It features the quarters of crew and captain, the officers dining
room, kitchen and crew eating counter along with the cavernous center hull,
pilot house, boiler room, and much more including memorabilia, photography and
artifacts.
