Turn back time 400 years for good old-fashioned family fun complete with thunderous jousting between knights in shining armor, swashbuckling pirates dueling to the end, fire-eaters, and the English Renaissance relived.
Sprawling across 30 acres and 12 stages with 100 shows daily, the Ohio Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg, Ohio is set for nine weeks of 16th Century living as it is transformed into one of the most genuine Medieval English villages ever. The authenticity is validated right down to the more than 130 crafters who are required to provide only goods that were true for the era, handmade by the vendor and made of materials that actually existed at the time of the Renaissance.
Meandering
the village dotted with chain maille skirts, leather scabbards, and
armored warriors, visitors are treated to demonstrations that include
blacksmithing, stone carving, leather crafting, calligraphy, glass
blowing, iron working, jewelry making, woodworking and candle making. In
addition to the open-air Shopper’s Marketplace, the lanes bustle with
strolling villagers, musicians, jugglers, fools, singers, dancers and
storytellers bringing history to life. And the food! Air wafting with the
mixed aroma of bread bowl stews, succulent poultry, vegetarian delights,
beef, stuffed spuds, desserts to kill for, hearty ales and flavorful wines
all offering the most discriminating palates a true taste of the
Renaissance.
There are plenty of ways to work off the tasty grub. Everyone in the family can enjoy games of skill such as archery or scaling the 25-foot Castle Tower to save the damsel in distress. Visit the Tower of London Dungeon Doom if you dare or enjoy the many games and human-powered rides.
The real excitement features spectacular events in sword fighting, pirate stunts, and mudslinging.
The Swordsmen delight crowds with their quick reflexes and wit as they perform daring – and humorous – stunts, duals and swordplay.
A spectacular 65-foot pirate ship sets the stage for an amazing nautical event – Pirate Stunt Show. In the midst of blazing guns and cannons, pirates are leaping from the rigging and plummeting from the crow’s nest. Pay attention or you walk the plank!
Mud is everywhere so beware if you sit in the first dozen rows at the Olympic-size Muditorium for Theatre in the Ground where literary classics are performed with comedic twists …in mud!
