The Woodward Opera House is located in downtown Mount Vernon and is listed as a national landmark. The Woodward opened in 1851 and is America’s oldest authentic 19^th century theater still in existence today. A popular theater in the late 1800’s, the Woodward is associated with Mount Vernon native, world famous musician, Dan Emmett. Currently, the historic Woodward Opera House is open for tours and is being restored to its 19^th century appearance but with all the 21^st century services needed for operating a theater. Tours of the opera house are available during the Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival, First Fridays events, and Mount Vernon’s Christmas Walk. Special group tours can be arranged by calling.
