Come spend a quiet, restful night—or many nights in my completely restored 1987 Townhouse located in downtown Cleveland, convenient to fine and casual restaurants, entertainment and business areas, hospitals, museums, universities and cathedrals. The Brownstone Inn sits in the center of it all!

I can give you one of two large front rooms with sitting areas or one of three medium-sized rooms. You will have a complete private bathroom and given a robe to wear to and from your room. In the morning, I will personally serve you a traditional American breakfast in a pleasant formal dining room where you can be casual and enjoy the other guests. A well-stocked kitchenette is available any hour of the day or night.

As you approach The Brownstone Inn on Prospect Avenue, you will find it easily identifiable from the adjoining four Brownstone doors by the peacock blue double entrance doors at the top of the stone steps. And, just in front on the tree lawn, notice America’s largest Elm Tree dating to 1860, designated by a plaque.

Entering through that peacock blue door you will step into the vestibule with handcrafted opulence representative of a 19th Century Victorian brownstone home. On the walls of the grand foyer and on the stairway you will see elegant patented French period wallpaper, applied in 1976 when this 4-story brownstone was renovated in honor of America’s 200th bicentennial celebration.

To your immediate left through tall arched pocket doors is the parlor with comfortable couches, a reading lamp, and an old working Jewett and Goodman pump-organ. A relaxation room where you will also find the daily New York Times. To your right and through another pocket door is the grand foyer, and just beyond is the large Red Dining Room boasting a traditional marble fireplace. This is where breakfast is served.

Accommodations include, two large front rooms with sitting areas; comfortable medium-sized rooms; second floor full kitchenette; ionized air purifiers; robes in each room; water-softener system; quiet common areas; central air conditioning, telephone and fax, private bathroom.

Come. Enjoy. And let me teach you some of Cleveland’s history.

Hearthstone Inn & Suites
A Good Night's Rest With A Touch of History

Hearthstone is a fine country inn that provides a good night’s rest with a touch of history.

(Map It) Located at 10 S. Main Street in Cedarville, Ohio, reservations can be made by calling toll-free 1-877-OHIO-INN (644-6466).

"A Visual Masterpiece", "Quiet Ambiance", "Cozy, family fun.” These descriptors, written by various travel writers from the Cincinnati Enquirer, Ohio magazine, and Fodor's Travel Guides, refer to Hearthstone Inn & Suites, a unique, family-run country inn, located in Cedarville, Ohio.

Combining the atmosphere of a Bed & Breakfast with the quality and amenities of high-quality hotels, owners Stuart & Ruth Zaharek - with 3 small children in tow - sought in 2001 to design and create not just an accommodation facility, but a lodging experience. Both "hospitality" and "cleanliness" are redefined at Hearthstone, which features a completely non-smoking environment. In fact, a review of the frequently-filled-and-replaced Guest Book reveals that it is common for guests to rank Hearthstone Inn with some of the finest lodging experiences in the world. Why? A distinctive late 19th-century decor, large stone fireplace, and fascinating wall murals make one's eyes dance with delight. Guests can take a relaxing break in the soothing glove leather sofa and let their imaginations whisk them away to some far-away place, being inspired by the surrounding art of Thomas Kinkade.

Guests are captivated by sparkling and radiant custom stained glass balcony window crafted in nearby Yellow Springs, Ohio. Museum displays featuring the history of the local area and the Civil War period are intriguing and educational. Stately, magnificent hand-hewn barn beams, made in 1885, surround the breakfast commons beneath the second-floor balcony. Brilliant color cascades through 19th-century reproduction hanging lamps, accentuating every stroke of the workman's axe upon the oak timbers, which hover above. Lifelike, hand-painted purple wisteria and green topiary compliment the décor, which is a unique blend of rustic and Queen Anne design elements. The warmth and serenity of Hearthstone Inn & Suites is truly unmatched by ordinary hotels, and distinctively different than smaller residential "B&B"s.

While at first impression its rural location, being ten miles from the nearest cities (Springfield and Xenia) may seem out-of-the-way, guests soon realize that Hearthstone is actually located just 10-15 minutes from numerous tourist attractions. And what attractions there are! Hikers can enjoy nearby Indian Mound Reserve, just outside of village limits, which features a 50-foot chasm, water fall, magnificent springtime Phlox fields, and an 40-foot high Indian mound. The historic Clifton Mill (www.cliftonmill.com), erected in 1802 and still functioning as a working grist mill, is but five minutes down the road. Entertaining thousands of visitors each year, a visit to Clifton Mill is especially endearing during the Christmas holiday season when it is ablaze with three million lights. While in Clifton, the popular Clifton Gorge features wonderful hiking - not strenuous at all - and some outstanding views of the Little Miami River. This is the same area where frontiersmen Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone wandered prior to Ohio statehood.

When the weather is mild and inviting, you can go for a jaunt on the Ohio-to-Erie Bike Trail, which is adjacent to the entrance to Hearthstone Inn & Suites. Connected with the famous Little Miami Bike Trail, Hearthstone Inn can even rent you a bike (even a bicycle built for two!), supply you with a helmet and a map, and send you merrily on your way for a day of leisurely trail exploration. If you plan it just right and stay in one of the deluxe suites, a bubbling Jacuzzi can soothe those muscles nicely at the end of the day. Even without a Jacuzzi, however, relaxing in a rocking chair on the wraparound porch while sipping a cold soda pop has its way of making your day refreshingly memorable.

Like antiques? Great antiquing can be found in town at Springfield's Antiques Extravaganza and several antique malls, together with Waynesville's ("Antique Capital of the Midwest") downtown antique district, are both 20 minutes away. If you really want to go back in time, the annual Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg can be easily reached in about 30 minutes.

How about unsurpassed dining experiences? Visit the Village of Yellow Springs (www.yellowspringsohio.org), where an eclectic array of shops and fabulous dining await you. Twice a year the village, located ten minutes from Cedarville, sponsors the Yellow Springs Street Fair, which attracts artisans and visitors from around the country.

Cedarville is a quiet, small-town community nestled in Greene County, with a population about 3,800. If your history teacher didn't point it out, Cedarville was home to U.S. Senator James H. Kyle, who was instrumental in establishing the Labor Day holiday. CedarFest is the annual village Labor Day event which commemorates this accomplishment of Senator Kyle. U.S. Ambassadore Whitelaw Reid also hailed from Cedarville, having run as vice-presidential candidate with Benjamin Harrison in 1892. Mr. Reid eventually succeeded Horace Greeley as editor of the New York Tribune. The current Cedarville Opera House was erected in 1888 (www.cedarvilleoperahouse.com), is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and stands today as a renovated tribute to Mr. Reid. As Ambassador to England, he provided the structural plans which were based on a one-third scale of the famous Royal Albert Hall. If you'd like to learn more Cedarville facts, visit www.CedarvilleOhio.net, and then browse through the displays featured at Hearthstone Inn & Suites.

Breakfast at Hearthstone Inn & Suites offers freshness and variety with cinnamon rolls, cheese danish, assorted muffins, fruit salad, hard boiled eggs, Bob Evans® sausage biscuits, yogurt, cereals, and much more adorn the dark green granite breakfast counter daily. Having a special event for a small group, party, church or civic function? Catering is available and a Conference/Banquet Room can accommodate up to 40 guests.

So whether it's romance, adventure, exploration, antiquing, a special event or just breaking away from the grind, a few days at Hearthstone Inn & Suites will prove to be the perfect prescription for restoration and refreshment!

When visiting SW Ohio, stay at the memorable Hearthstone Inn & Suites country inn hotel.  Just 30 minutes from Dayton. "A Good Nights Rest with a Touch of History".  Reservations 1-877-644-6466.

City slickers east of the Mississippi can saddle up for the ride of their life on a western dude ranch …in Ohio!

Ohio was known as the “Gateway State" to the Wild West more than a century ago because its trails, rivers, canals and railways connected the eastern states to the open plains of the west.  So when people today look for an authentic experience living, working and vacationing all at the same time on a real dude ranch, they naturally think they must go west. That is until their search for the best dude ranches in the country uncovers a golden nugget known as KD Guest Ranch in Adamsville, Ohio where they are Bringin’ The West to the East!

From the get-go, Kari (K) and Dave (D) Burkey turn on the charm at KD Guest Ranch. It is nestled in rolling hills untouched by man as far as the eyes can see, spanning 550 acres of family land. There, they lasso up trail rides, team penning, dude rodeo, evening entertainment, BBQ, and a whole lot more! The first thing that takes hold of the psyche is the serenity of it all. The setting is better than the actual west. It is not dry, barren, brown and flat, oh no! It is vividly colorful with wood lines, green pastures and valleys with watering holes that provide some old-fashioned cowboy kicks. Take an afternoon swim, canoe ride or just fish.

Some guests find the lodge life their speed and get lost in a novel on a comfy sofa in the rustic library flush with natural light. It’s where Kari permanently sealed a chest of Dave’s old rodeo gear from his bull riding days. The three square meals Dave and his dad cook up for guests will be some of the best eatin’ you’ve ever done in your life. And you’ll never miss a meal because you can hear that metal triangle being rung near and far signaling, “Get it while it’s hot!”

The saloon has plenty of table space to spread out, billiards, fireplace and some evenings, a cowboy pluckin’ away at the guitar singing the night away while card games, conversation and laughter echo throughout the lodge. When it’s time to retire to your guest quarters, you hit the trail and land in your cozy cabin done up special to make sure you never leave “the west.”

Once everyone is settled in and strangers become friends, you are matched with your horse for your 4 – 6 day stay. During orientation you will observe a round pen demonstration and see how horses are trained. This lesson teaches horse psychology, how to ride and tack your horse. Pay attention because you will be responsible for getting, grooming, and saddling your horse.

When the dusty trails come a calling, you’ll enjoy nature’s vistas, riding the fence lines and driving cattle. Afterward, it’s time for some cowboy fun. Enter the arena for rodeo games where you can learn to pen calves by separating three at a time from the herd and heading them into a small pen. With experience you may partake in timed team penning and whoop up a whole lot of rootin’ and hollering. Try not to say, “Yee-Ha!” When you git’r done.

For those who like to rough it, there’s an optional overnight excursion that’ll allow you to cook over an open fire and sleep under the stars or in a primitive cabin. But if that’s keepin’ it too real, gather round the bon fire or poker table and listen to live music back at the lodge.

Even cowboys take a day off here and there and when they do, you can usually find them gathered at the nearest swimming hole. In this case, it’s a small lake complete with floating dock, water slide, pedal boats and canoe. Spend the afternoon swimming, reading or playing horseshoes and volleyball. And when you get hungry, no worries, food comes to you. While you’re having fun in the sun, the barbecue is on. A really long picnic table waits with all the fixings for a feast amidst the breezy shelter of shade trees.

Throughout the stay, food is a plenty. Whenever you find yourself parched, no matter where on the ranch that may be, there are pitchers of lemonade, iced tea and water served up. Fruit, ice cream bars and other snacks accompany it. The main meals are served in a variety of ways from family style to buffet style, and of course cowboy style. Bacon, eggs and grits may greet you in the morning, followed by a tasty lunch only to be topped by a lip smackin’ dinner with BBQ ribs or a thick juicy steak, not to mention fresh vegetables and mouth watering homemade desserts. Common words you’re bound to hear meal after meal are, “I need that recipe.” You may be surprised that Kari and Dave are more than happy to give it to you. If someone has special dietary needs, no worries, your menu will be prearranged.

Other amenities include a game room, hot tub, massage and exercise space and conference rooms.

KD Guest Ranch usually entertains smaller groups so that everyone feels like they’re part of the extended family. Just a stone’s throw from the lodge, there are four cabins that can accommodate up to 15 people. The cabins are spacious with a rustic ranch decor but also include modern amenities. Watch the sun rise or set from the sprawling porch sipping a drink or passing time in a rocking chair.

Dave takes special care in putting together his groups. When families, couples or individuals want to book 4 – 6 nights, they are matched to optimize camaraderie when possible. In addition, there are opportunities to book exclusive family reunions, corporate retreats and team building groups, as well as church, scout and other groups.

KD Guest Ranch is only a few years old so everything from the barn, lodge and cabins appears to be brand new! And it’s clean as a whistle anywhere you go on the grounds. Located in the Southeast Ohio foot hills of Appalachia country, KD Guest Ranch is ideally located for folks to mosey on over from any corner of Ohio, the surrounding states and across the Midwest.

Learn more about KD Guest Ranch by calling 740-796-0099 or visiting www.kdguestranch.com.

Unity Woods

Contact: Cindy Cates

Web Site: www.unitywoods.org

Network television has recently discovered what Cindy and Jeff Cates have known for years – Americans want to stop the world and get off, if just for a day or two. Much as large audiences are drawn to Colonial Days, The Simple Life or Amish in the City, Unity Woods draws Southwest Ohio’s city-dwellers to a place in nature, especially during September through Novembers’ Autumn splendor.

The Cates, owners of Unity Woods, set three goals as they sought to exchange Cincinnati’s skyscrapers for peace, quiet and the beauty of nature: Save land from a developer, build a woodland paradise and share it with the world. Succeeding on all accounts (plus saving their own dwelling from its previous inhabitants – chickens), the Cates purchased 175 acres of unspoiled, secluded woodland complete with pond, creek, wildlife and scenic hiking trails adjacent to a 196 acres State Nature Preserve located in the heart of rural Adams County Amish community and outdoor activities haven.

The Campfire Ring

Guests can choose from three Amish style cottages, pet-friendly on weekdays, reflecting life of Ohio’s frontier more than a century ago. Visitors often discover they are not alone in the sense that woodland visitors often stop by. These include wild turkeys, grouse, indigo buntings, owls, fox, raccoons, hawks and prancing deer. Evenings are often spent lounging in the cool breeze rolling through a screened-in cottage porch or listening to the crackle of the Unity bon fire while gazing at nature’s starlit ceiling. By day, guests explore the miles of scenic trails, fossil-laden creek beds, hunting for Morel mushrooms and fishing in a spring fed pond stocked with bass and other fish. The surrounding area provides shopping at a large Amish community, bird watching along the Appalachian Discovery Birding & Heritage Trail, and driving the rural countryside in search
of painted barn quilt squares.

The cottages provide the ultimate privacy as they are nestled in the au naturel serenity of Unity Woods. Equipped with complete bath, plenty of hot water and full kitchen, these cozy cottages are a throwback from modern living and conveniences such as electricity, which enhance the unfettered quiet – except for that of nighttime creatures. And it brings people together like few getaways can, thus…Unity Woods.

Unity Woods isn’t for everybody. It caters mainly to outdoor enthusiasts such as bird watchers, campers, hikers, and hunters (although hunting is prohibited on the property). It also attracts many seniors and couples looking for a romantic retreat without the kids. For more information about Unity Woods, call 937-544-6908 or log onto www.unitywoods.org.

GREAT WOLF LODGE

Great Wolf Lodge (originally called “Great Bear Lodge”) is the smallest waterpark of the current three at 33,000 square feet. However, with a total of 9 slides and 5 pools, a 25-foot rock climbing wall, a toddler tree house area, and an arts-and-crafts playhouse in the lodge itself, it still has a lot to offer. I especially like the adult-only hot tub tucked away in a corner!

Our family has stayed at Great Wolf Lodge several times and one of my favorite things about it has been the lobby. Really! This space is very homey, despite its Paul Bunyanesque size, and lodge guests are encouraged to use it as an auxiliary living room. It’s a very pleasant spot to hang out too, with a large fireplace, several comfy seating areas grouped around coffee tables large enough for a rousing board game (available at the reservation desk), a coffee cart, and a two-story animated clock tower that puts on regular shows.

During one stay, I spotted an elderly man in the lobby in flannel PJs, robe, and slippers, reading the morning newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee as he sat by the fire. I’ve also seen solitary adults reading and enjoying the quiet, a foursome playing cards, a crowd of pajama-clad tots listening to the nightly bedtime story, several families watching the clock tower show, and (in the lodge’s annual December Snowland celebration) guests singing Christmas carols under real-looking snow falling from the lobby ceiling while they waited for Santa to arrive.

For me, the lobby’s crowning touch is the mounted moose head on the wall that sings at timed intervals, never failing to draw a crowd of amazed kids and amused adults. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard a stuffed animal head singing “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Baby” in a voice that sounds just like Barry White!

The other thing I really enjoy about Great Wolf Lodge is the food. Whether you have a drink and appetizers in the Gitchigoomie Grill while seated under the authentic aeroplane that hangs from the ceiling or you enjoy a family-style meal in Lumber Jack’s Cook Shanty, you won’t be disappointed – the food in both places is excellent. In fact, the burgers in the grill are the best I’ve ever eaten!

A nice touch in the grill is the kid’s menu, which offers goodies like hamburgers and hot dogs, mac & cheese, and PB&J, along with drinks for childish palates, made of ingredients like lemonade, ice cream, piña colada mix, and juices. They even offer an appetizer plate with taste treats like peanut butter pinwheels with jelly dip and strawberries with fruit dip. How cool is that? - Review written by Betty Winslow.

KALAHARI WATERPARK RESORT

In May of 2005, the Kalahari Waterpark Resort opened the largest indoor waterpark in Ohio at that time, with an 80,000 square foot waterpark, 308 guest rooms, 2 restaurants, a day spa, a miniature golf course, a pottery decorating area, a video arcade, and an amazing meeting and conference center. With the opening of a huge expansion project on December 21, 2007, the Kalahari will become the largest indoor waterpark in the US, with a mind-boggling 160,000 square feet of water fun.

For large families or extended family groups, this is probably the park to pick. Their Village Suite, the largest room available among all three waterparks, holds 12 adults and includes a full-sized and fully equipped kitchen. In addition, there’s plenty to do besides just play in the water.

Does your family like arts and crafts? You can decorate pottery, do make-it-take-it crafts, have body art done, or get a caricature made. If unique shopping is more your bag, you can pick up a cool swimsuit or an authentic piece of African art or have someone’s name engraved on a piece of rice and set into jewelry.

Family members who are into health and fitness can play miniature golf, use the workout area, or get a massage at the spa. Plus, I can’t forget to mention the Surfari FlowRider. Surfing in Ohio. And indoors, yet. How cool is that?

There’s even a two-story dry playhouse area for tots who aren’t so fond of the water, and (in the summer) a big outdoor pool area lined with rentable bungalows that include mini fridges, flat-screen TVs, and lounge chairs. Really, there’s something for everyone!

I love Ohio waterpark vacations, especially in the winter. You never have to worry about the weather’s effect on your plans. You aren’t taking a long expensive airplane trip to get somewhere (which means no hassles with airport security – yay!) You can spend an entire day in your swimsuit, even in January. Best of all, you can eat, sleep, shop, and play without ever having to go outside.

Find out for yourself what specials and options each property offers and then choose the one that’s just right for your family. Check them out. You'll be glad you did! - Review written by Betty Winslow
