humble beginnings in 1976 as a block party celebrating Cincinnati’s deep German
heritage, the event has grown to be recognized as North America’s largest
Oktoberfest, attracting 500,000 annually, and is second only to the original in
Munich as annually decreed by the Mayor of Munich.
Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati
features approximately 80 booths serving up authentic German food, beer, wine,
soft drinks and souvenirs. Food vendors will serve
up tasty delicacies from the homeland at appetizing prices. Major stages and large tents
feature live entertainment — from big bands to accordion players to German folk
dancers performing throughout the weekend.
For the kids, Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati offers amusement rides and interactive
games.
Where else can you get
87,542 metts, 80,500 bratwurst, 64,000 sauerkraut balls, 56,250 sausages, 24,640
potato pancakes, 23,004 soft pretzels, 16,002 strudel, 3,600 lbs. Sauerkraut, 1,875 lbs. German potato
salad, 702 lbs. Limburger cheese, 700 pigtails
and 400 pickled pigs feet?
In 1994, the
Crown Prince of Bavaria attended Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati and helped the event set a world record for the
World’s Largest Chicken Dance, with 48,000 participating. Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati
held the world record in the Guinness Book of Records, 1995-97 editions.

Victorian
Village residents are busily preparing to welcome a couple thousand visitors
from all over the Midwest to their annual Tour of Homes and Gardens. Tour buses will circle the route all day but
the tour is also a very enjoyable walk through shady, tree-lined streets. There
is also a Preview Tour the day before the main tour which includes the tour plus
an elegant dinner in a private home for which $100 donation are requested.
All proceeds from the tour go towards enhancing and preserving this
architecturally and historically-significant neighborhood on the National
Register of Historic Places. This beautiful area was developed in the late
1800s but fell on hard times in the mid-1900s as people began moving to the
suburbs. In 1974, the area was named Victorian Village (due to the
architectural styles of its century-old homes) and an architectural review
commission and neighborhood society was formed. Thus a renaissance began and
today this is one of the most desirable communities in Columbus.
It is located between the downtown skyscrapers and the
sprawling OSU campus. The eastern boundary of Victorian Village is the
Short North Arts District – reputedly the largest gathering of art galleries
between New York and Chicago. There are also many wonderful restaurants
and B&Bs in the area.

America’s heritage is centered on the fall harvest. It has been a time
of celebration from the pioneers to present. So it is with this spirit
that so many treasures across Darke County offer everything autumn.
Prairie Days
at Shawnee Prairie brings an entire community from 1780 – 1810 to life,
including blacksmith, candle makers, living encampment, storytellers,
traveling musicians, ladies at spinning wheels and lessons on loading a
musket and rifle, plus fresh apple butter and corn being shred and
ground. Pioneer games are being played and men are at work carving a
canoe out of tree trunk Wares are for sale, include jewelry, pottery and
other pieces from the 1700 - 1800’s. Kettle corn, ice cream and other
tasty treats fill bellies in time for a leisurely tractor or horse-drawn
wagon ride.
Over at Bears Mill, the French Buhr millstones are busy grinding
flours and meals just as they have since 1849. This working historical
landmark is a destination for artists and photographers. Sitting on the
banks of Greenville Creek, the hand hewn timber framework stands four
stories against the wooded backdrop, which offers lovely fall hiking
trails. Inside, tours of all four floors reveal a storied history.
There’s also an art gallery featuring locally handmade pottery,
paintings and other original works.
A stone’s skip from the ole mill is Brumbaugh Fruit & Fun Farm.
It features an orchard that has grown into a diverse family destination
for people to come play and shop at the same time. Get lost in the Kinda
Kooky Korn Maze or set the kids loose on the Human Hamster Wheels.
Hayrides to the pumpkin patch learning to feed and groom the farm
animals are kids’ favorites. Storybook characters wait in an enchanted
forest and hiking throughout the orchards teaches about the many
varieties of apples grown on the farm. Behind the scenes tours reveal
the cider press room and cooler.
A Harvest of Happenings
also features the Ohio Gourd Show at the Darke County Fairgrounds
in Greenville. Artisans bend them, shape them and paint them to make
masks, bowls, and musical instruments. Many of the specimens are for
sale. In addition, there are workshops, food, entertainment and crafts.
In downtown Greenville’s quaint, shopping district, the
streetscape is buzzing with activity! There’s even a tractor cruise. The
harvest is celebrated with festive scarecrow displays, chili cook-off
and tasting, story time on the Courthouse lawn, fashion show, Farmers’
Market and a salsa cooking demonstration at KitchenAid Experience
Center.
