The Cuyahoga County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument was erected in 1894 in downtown Cleveland’s Public Square. Its column extends 125 feet into the air and is topped with the Goddess of Freedom and defended by the Shield of Liberty. It commemorates the Civil War. The base surrounds the monument with an esplanade, and bronzed battle scenes depict the Navy, Artillery, Infantry, and Cavalry. Inside is a Memorial Room and bronze sculptures: Women’s Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Aid Society; Beginning of the War in Ohio; Emancipation of the Slaves and End of the War; and busts of General James Barnett and the sculptor and architect Levi T. Scofield. There are also six officers killed in action or died from wounds or disease. For a limited time each spring, the coveted Tunnel Tours draw crowds from far and wide to explore the rarely-seen subterranean world hiding behind the walls and beneath Public Square for a nominal fee.
