In 1987, the world as many men in the Carroll County area knew it came to the end with the closing of Coley’s Stag. The men-only bar, an “institution of higher learning” from 1930 until 1987, was owned by brothers Russel and Henry Cole.
Although a parking lot now stands at Coley’s Stag’s location, the legacy of the brothers continue with Coley’s Stag Reunion, held the Friday after Thanksgiving at Long’s Storage Units and organized by the Carrollton Civic Club. Proceeds from the event benefit the Russel and Henry Cole Scholarship Fund and has provided more than $65,000 in scholarships to Carrollton High School students.
The event features Coley’s hot chili and bean soup, made using the same recipes as the Cole brothers, ham-and-Swiss sandwiches and beverages. Those attending who purchase a collectible chili bowl may eat all the soup they can throughout the day. Many former residents return to enjoy the soup and visit with old friends and make new ones during the event.
