If you’re looking for an easy getaway—or even a relaxing weekend—Shelby County might surprise you. It’s the kind of place where you can fill your day with things to do or just take your time and enjoy wherever you end up.
One of the most unique experiences here is the Airstream Factory Tour. Even if you’ve never considered yourself an RV person, it’s impressive to see these iconic travel trailers being built right in front of you. While you’re there, the Airstream Heritage Center is worth a stop too, with vintage models and pieces of history you won’t find anywhere else.
If you’d rather be outside, Tawawa Park is a great place to start. With miles of trails, fishing spots, and plenty of space to explore, it’s easy to spend a few hours—or most of the day—there. Be sure to check out the Ross Covered Bridge and Big Rock while you’re in the park. And just outside the entrance, BK Root Beer Stand is a classic summer stop that’s hard to pass up. Those on the more adventurous side can venture out beyond the park’s borders to explore the Canal Feeder Trail that serves as the trail head to the Great Miami Riverway trail, a 99-mile paddle-pedal adventure from Sidney to Hamilton, Ohio. The Great Miami Riverway is Ohio’s only National Water Trail and the nation’s longest paved trail network.
From the park, you’re just minutes from downtown Sidney, where you’ll find a variety of places to eat and unwind. Local favorites include Murphy’s Craftbar + Kitchen, The Bridge Restaurant, Spot Restaurant, and The New Rainbow Bar & Grill. Whether you’re grabbing something quick or sitting down for a meal, there’s a good mix of options. There are also plans for a new Mexican restaurant expected to open downtown this summer, adding even more to the local dining scene.
Downtown is also a great place to slow down a bit. You can browse shops like Moonflower Effect and The Ivy Garland, or stop into Austeria Wine Boutique for a relaxed tasting. If you need a pick-me-up, Greenhaus Coffee is always a solid choice.
If you’re visiting between May and October, Saturday mornings at the Great Sidney Farmers Market are worth working into your plans. It’s a great mix of fresh produce, baked goods, and local vendors—and a good way to get a feel for the community.
Another favorite stop is Crossway Farms Farm Market. It’s just outside of town and known for its fresh foods, local items, and, of course, its donut trailer. They also have a weekly spot at the Farmer’s Market.
For those who enjoy history and architecture, there’s plenty to take in downtown. The Farmers and Merchants State Bank—designed by Louis Sullivan—is a standout, along with the Monumental Building and the Shelby County Courthouse.
If you’re looking to venture out a bit, Lake Loramie State Park is a short drive away and offers boating, kayaking, fishing, camping, swimming, and a great place to relax by the water. And for families, Vandemark Farm is always a fun option with plenty to do – ziplining, mini golf, petting zoo, corn maze, hay rides and a driving range!
Looking ahead to fall, one event to keep in mind is the Civil War Living History Weekend on September 19–20, hosted by the Shelby County Historical Society at Tawawa Park. With reenactments, encampments, and demonstrations, it’s an engaging way to experience history in a very real setting.
