Hearthstone Inn & Suites in Cedarville, Ohio is “A Visual Masterpiece”, “Quiet Ambiance”, “Cozy, family fun.” These descriptors, written by various travel writers from the Cincinnati Enquirer, Ohio magazine, and Fodor’s Travel Guides, refer to Hearthstone Inn & Suites, a unique, family-run country inn, located in Cedarville, Ohio.
Combining the atmosphere of a Bed & Breakfast with the quality and amenities of high-quality hotels, owners Stuart & Ruth Zaharek – with 3 small children in tow – sought in 2001 to design and create not just an accommodation facility, but a lodging experience. Both “hospitality” and “cleanliness” are redefined at Hearthstone, which features a completely non-smoking environment. In fact, a review of the frequently-filled-and-replaced Guest Book reveals that it is common for guests to rank Hearthstone Inn with some of the finest lodging experiences in the world. Why? A distinctive late 19th-century decor, large stone fireplace, and fascinating wall murals make one’s eyes dance with delight. Guests can take a relaxing break in the soothing glove leather sofa and let their imaginations whisk them away to some far-away place, being inspired by the surrounding art of Thomas Kinkade.
Guests are captivated by sparkling and radiant custom stained glass balcony window crafted in nearby Yellow Springs, Ohio. Museum displays featuring the history of the local area and the Civil War period are intriguing and educational. Stately, magnificent hand-hewn barn beams, made in 1885, surround the breakfast commons beneath the second-floor balcony. Brilliant color cascades through 19th-century reproduction hanging lamps, accentuating every stroke of the workman’s axe upon the oak timbers, which hover above. Lifelike, hand-painted purple wisteria and green topiary compliment the décor, which is a unique blend of rustic and Queen Anne design elements. The warmth and serenity of Hearthstone Inn & Suites is truly unmatched by ordinary hotels, and distinctively different than smaller residential “B&B”s.
While at first impression its rural location, being ten miles from the nearest cities (Springfield and Xenia) may seem out-of-the-way, guests soon realize that Hearthstone is actually located just 10-15 minutes from numerous tourist attractions. And what attractions there are! Hikers can enjoy nearby Indian Mound Reserve, just outside of village limits, which features a 50-foot chasm, water fall, magnificent springtime Phlox fields, and an 40-foot high Indian mound. The historic Clifton Mill, erected in 1802 and still functioning as a working grist mill, is but five minutes down the road. Entertaining thousands of visitors each year, a visit to Clifton Mill is especially endearing during the Christmas holiday season when it is ablaze with three million lights. While in Clifton, the popular Clifton Gorge features wonderful hiking – not strenuous at all – and some outstanding views of the Little Miami River. This is the same area where frontiersmen Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone wandered prior to Ohio statehood.
When the weather is mild and inviting, you can go for a jaunt on the Ohio-to-Erie Bike Trail, which is adjacent to the entrance to Hearthstone Inn & Suites. Connected with the famous Little Miami Bike Trail, Hearthstone Inn can even rent you a bike (even a bicycle built for two!), supply you with a helmet and a map, and send you merrily on your way for a day of leisurely trail exploration. If you plan it just right and stay in one of the deluxe suites, a bubbling Jacuzzi can soothe those muscles nicely at the end of the day. Even without a Jacuzzi, however, relaxing in a rocking chair on the wraparound porch while sipping a cold soda pop has its way of making your day refreshingly memorable.
Like antiques? Great antiquing can be found in town at Springfield’s Antiques Extravaganza and several antique malls, together with Waynesville’s (“Antique Capital of the Midwest”) downtown antique district, are both 20 minutes away. If you really want to go back in time, the annual Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg can be easily reached in about 30 minutes.
How about unsurpassed dining experiences? Visit the Village of Yellow Springs, where an eclectic array of shops and fabulous dining await you. Twice a year the village, located ten minutes from Cedarville, sponsors the Yellow Springs Street Fair, which attracts artisans and visitors from around the country.
Cedarville is a quiet, small-town community nestled in Greene County, with a population about 3,800. If your history teacher didn’t point it out, Cedarville was home to U.S. Senator James H. Kyle, who was instrumental in establishing the Labor Day holiday. CedarFest is the annual village Labor Day event which commemorates this accomplishment of Senator Kyle. U.S. Ambassadore Whitelaw Reid also hailed from Cedarville, having run as vice-presidential candidate with Benjamin Harrison in 1892. Mr. Reid eventually succeeded Horace Greeley as editor of the New York Tribune. The current Cedarville Opera House was erected in 1888, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and stands today as a renovated tribute to Mr. Reid. As Ambassador to England, he provided the structural plans which were based on a one-third scale of the famous Royal Albert Hall.
